Many of us recognize that every 14th of February is Valentine’s Day, but do you really know the origin of this holiday?
Most of you know that this is in commemoration of St. Valentine’s works. Based on hte legend, St. Valentine was a priest who, when Emperor Claudius 2 banned marriage because of the belief that this made soldiers weak, worked secretly to unite and marry the lovers who, despite the ruling of the emperor, decide to unite in matrimony anyway. Because of this, Valentine was put to death.
I bet most of you wouldn’t know the connection between Valentine’s day to a pagan ritual called Lupercalia. Not many people really know this or bother to know of it. Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. It was celebrated on the 15th of February… and because of this, some believe that Valentine’s day was made to be celebrated on the 14th to lessen the impact and maybe ‘Christianize’ this pagan one.
